Sarah Bernstein announces the release of her new pop-rock single, “Maxine”

Sarah Bernstein is a talented singer, songwriter, and recording artist based in New York City who is rapidly making a name for herself within the music industry. She began her songwriting career with the release of very her first single titled, “Man in the Moon” (2012) which received an immensely positive reception from audiences both locally and abroad. Additional releases, such as her songs “Boomerang” and “One Night Only”, only continued to solidify Sarah Bernstein as an ascending artist for the world to keep an eye on.

Sarah has achieved a great deal over the years including releasing her dynamic 6-track EP titled, “Spellbound”, and she has even recorded her original music at notable recording studios such as House of David Studio in Nashville. Most recently, Sarah Bernstein released her 90’s reminiscent single titled “Maxine” – which is already garnering her attention from not only dedicated fans, but also new listeners world-wide. Hello, Sarah! Thank you for joining us today. I’d love to know, when did you first discover your passion for music?

Sarah: I wish I had a better answer to this question, like some sort of epic moment where it struck me to write a song, but I don’t. Writing little melodies in my head is just something I’ve always done. I took piano lessons growing up and played the saxophone in the school band but I was never particularly dedicated to either. I loved Broadway—(still do!)—but didn’t think of myself as a strong enough singer to go down that road. Eventually I saw the movie ‘Freaky Friday’ with Lindsay Lohan, and remember thinking she was basically the coolest person I had ever seen. It sounds silly to say, but it’s true. And as a pre-teen it gave me the confidence to sign up for guitar class even though it was a total boys club. I wrote my first song that day in our middle school computer lab. It only had two chords because that’s all I knew how to play, but the rest was history.

What three words would you say best summarize your musical style?

Sarah: Honest, bold, catchy.

Tell me about your most recent music release titled, “Maxine”… what was the inspiration behind writing it?

Sarah: “Maxine” is one of those songs where the meaning has changed for me over time. Initially it was about seeing someone you love be hurt by someone else. It’s such a gut-wrenching thing to watch and there’s nothing you can do about it. But over time my perspective has changed and I think my confidence has grown too. Now I see “Maxine” as this playfully villainous character who wears heart-shaped sunglasses that also coincidentally look like devil horns. Perspective is everything and songs are definitely no exception.

What is the next “big thing” the world can expect from you?

Sarah: My next big goal is creating an EP that ties my last four singles together and bridging the gap between them. All four songs were written within a six month time frame, but not necessarily released in the order I wrote them in. This let each song stand alone, but also diluted any resemblance of a narrative. So I’d love to elaborate on that by supplying context and giving people something new to listen for.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways has music helped you?

Sarah: Songwriting is an incredibly powerful emotional processing tool. It has the ability to verbalize subconscious thoughts and feelings. When there’s nothing else you can do about it, that’s when you write about it. The lyrics don’t lie— sometimes I look down at the page and am surprised by how intensely I feel about something. Other times, their meaning isn’t clear until much later. But either way, it’s like a direct-line to my inner voice. I’m so grateful songwriting found me and don’t know how I’d get through life without it.
