INTERVIEW

When did you first discover your passion for music?

R: I was about eight years-old when my mother took me to my first vocal lessons, and one of the first songs I ever learned to sing was “Once Upon A December” from the Disney movie Anastasia. It’s this sweet, dreamy lullaby song, and my family absolutely loved to hear me sing it around the house. I think it was seeing how happy my loved ones were to simply hear me sing, that I started to develop a true love for music. It seemed like magic to me!

What three words would you say best summarize you/your music?

R: Poetic. Introspective. Romantic.

Tell me about your upcoming “Everything” ep release… what was the inspiration behind it?

R: In the past, most of my songs have been primarily centered around heartache and nostalgia regarding my romantic relationships… because that was how I felt at the time. My life looks different now though, and as I was trying to write Everything, I thought long and hard about the messages that I wanted to communicate through my music from this point on. During such a crazy year like 2020, there were so many times when I felt extremely unsure about my next steps in life… how can I achieve all that I’ve dreamed of in the face of so many delays and obstacles? How can I feel at peace at all and trust that this is all part of the Universe’s plan for me? The lyrics were difficult to write at first… but over time, the songs began to pour out of me. In a way, the five songs on my EP show my chronological life progression over the past year.

What is your favorite song or part of your ep?

R: The last track, “Safety”, is my favorite. It is funny because it was the first song I started writing lyrics for on this EP, and months later, it was the last song I finished. I think the Universe knew I had to learn some more emotional lessons before I was ready to write the lyrics in the most authentic way. The song speaks of finally, for the first time ever, feeling the sense of peace and security I’ve always longed for. You don’t find peace through your achievements, possessions, fame, or even in the arms of another person… that never lasts. Inner peace is something you uncover and nurture within your own heart. My absolute favorite part of the EP though is the very ending of “Safety”. After the last Chorus, I added in voice clips of Marilyn Monroe’s last interview before she past away saying, “Do I feel happy in life? Let’s say… I hope I’m finding happiness.”. I was so moved to hear this world-renowned star, who seemingly had everything – fame, beauty, wealth… still longing for what often alludes us all; happiness and safety.

how do you want your music to help other people?

R: I want my music to help people know that it is okay to speak from their heart, even when it may be painful. I think too often, people hide their feelings away to protect themselves from being hurt or judged… I want to encourage compassionate self-expression and love. Talk through want you feel instead of just holding it inside, write your thoughts and dreams down, dance, paint, play guitar! When you give your love to the world, you’ll find that is what you’ll attract back to you.

Who are your idols?

R: Lana Del Rey, Pink Floyd, and honestly… my mom. Interesting combo, huh?

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

R: To do almost exactly what I am doing now! It may not last forever, but I have time to write, invest in my music, learn new things and hobbies, spend time with my family, add value to others… all of that 100% influences the art I have created. The most important thing to me is to be happy, to live my life and express myself authentically right here and now.
