NELSON GIBSON JR
Singer + RECORDING ARTISt
ABOUT
Nelson Gibson, Jr. began his singing career at the age of five years-old. Following in his mother’s footsteps (International Gospel Recording Artist, Christal Brown Heyward), Nelson started his musical journey singing at numerous churches and events around Charleston, South Carolina. By the age of 13, Nelson completed the recording of his promotional radio single, “The Anthem” produced by GRAMMY-Nominated writer, Michael Brown (released November 2015).
His brand new single, “Painkiller”, released May 2021, was produced by R&B/Hip Hop Artist, Mike Brown, and mastered by GRAMMY-Award Winning Songwriter, CL Baxter. Grabbing the attention of many bloggers and music reviewers, “Painkiller” induced a major buzz, selling over 10,000+ copies in the first week. Nelson’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, “After The Storm” is set to release in 2022. Gibson’s catalog in it’s entirety is available everywhere.
“I want my music to help other people realize that it’s okay to not be okay, but KEEP MOVING.”
INTERVIEW
When did you first discover your passion for music, Nelson?
N: I was four years-old when I first discovered my passion for music. I used to travel with my mother when I was young, watching her direct choirs and record in the studio always inspired me.
What three words would you say best summarize your music?
N: Heartfelt, soulful, and raw.
So tell me about your latest song release “Painkiller”. What was the inspiration for you to write it?
N: During one of our writing sessions, my producer Mike Brown and I started having conversation about how God is often used as a temporary fix to our problems. We use other things as painkillers; whether that be shopping, food, sex, toxic relationships… The lyrics in my song question why we use those things to patch up the pain we feel, rather than going to God, who can make you whole.
Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal their injuries… in what ways has music helped you?
N: Music has helped me get through every major obstacle in my life. Heartbreak, life disappointments, industry let-downs, etc. It has especially been very cathartic for me on my journey of grief. I have lost five loved ones in only three years… music has carried me through some of my darkest days.
How do you want your music to help other people?
N: I want my music to help other people realize that it’s okay to not be okay, but KEEP MOVING. Life isn’t easy. The Word tells us in John 16:33 that in this life you WILL have trouble, but to take heart because He has overcome the world. No matter your religion or spiritual belief, the principle remains the same. No matter how hard it storms, the sun has no choice but to shine one day.
What is your songwriting process?
N: Melodies can come to me while I’m in the shower, in Walmart, and even while I’m doing laundry! My most passionate lyrics come to me through worship though, when I’m having a one-on-one conversation with the Holy Spirit. Our writing sessions are just us gathering together joining in with the company of Jesus. He gives me/us songs for whatever the season calls for. The most amazing part about that, is that the songs He gives me transcend seasons and conditions! They can be used as a tool to help get me through anything.
What would your idyllic life as an artist look like?
N: Touring and meeting people who support me, for sure. But for my LIFE, I definitely just want to feel at peace, living in a big house with a happy family! Winning awards, traveling, meeting fans… all of those things are wonderful, but ultimately before anything, I want peace. I believe that peace of mind helps one create the best art.
