INTERVIEW

Hello, Mike! Thank you for joining us today. When did you first discover your passion for music?

Mike: When I was 10 or maybe 11 years old I started playing the old guitar that my parents had in the loft. (It was in there when they moved in).

That was it. I was hooked.

Do you feel being a songwriter has always been your calling?

Mike: Sort of. I’ve spent most of my life writing guitar parts for other people’s songs. Either writing the guitar parts first and then someone uses that as a basis for their lyrics and melodies or sometimes my job has been adding guitar to tracks that’s have already been written. Love Letters From Space is the first time I’ve written songs completely from scratch on my own with no outside influence.

What three words would you say best summarize your musical style?

Mike: Glam, Psychedelic, Alien.

I’d love to know, how did you come up with your project name, “Love Letters From Space”?

Mike: These songs are written from the point of view of aliens watching Earth from Space.

We humans must seem very odd to them. I mean humans are very odd aren’t we? We have wars, poverty, greed, inequality of all kinds…but at the same time it’s quite clear that we are capable of incredible things.

The highly evolved beings out there in The Universe understand that humans will only reach our true potential if we learn to connect with each other on a deeper level. After all, our bodies are entirely made of the same particles from the big bang. Billions of years later, those particles have formed our bodies and our minds. Each human being on this earth is a Love letter From Space.

Which song on your EP means the most to you, and why?

Mike: “The Note In Her Hand” was a tough one to write but has been the most rewarding. It’s the first time I’ve had strangers message me and tell me that a song I’ve written has helped them in some way. I’d never really thought I’d do that. To be honest that still feels surreal.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways has music helped you?

Mike: Everything else in the world has always felt very confusing but music has always made sense to me.

The inside of my brain is pretty random. Sometimes that can be a good thing and sometimes it’s… well not a good thing. But no matter what happens I know that I can turn all that into a sound, a riff, a beat a lyric melody or whatever and then I’ll feel better about having this super weird brain that I have for some reason.

How would you like your music to help other people?

Mike: I hope that I can make people feel like they are not alone. You can be surrounded by lots of people and still feel like no one understands you or cares about you. Especially if you’re different from them in some way. I’ve tried to be as open and as honest as I can in the hope that others will feel more comfortable being open and vulnerable with each other.

I also hope that anyone who hears these songs will start imagining what humans must seem like to aliens watching us from space.

Why are we judging each other? Why are we destroying our planet? Why is there so much conflict? Zooming out and picturing humanity from a different perspective could solve so many of our problems.

What is your interpretation of being an artist? What does it mean to you?

Mike: To me the challenge and the journey of being an artist is to try and dismantle those internal barriers that could stop you expressing yourself authentically. Your ego will try every trick in the book to throw you off course. You could add too much to a song because you’re trying to flex or you could leave an idea out because you’re worried that people won’t think that idea is cool. Learning to stay balanced on the tight rope between those two things is the real essence of being an artist.

Who would you say is your number one musical influence?

Mike: Prince

What is your songwriting process?

Mike: There isn’t one process. Some songs start as a riff, some start as something I’m singing in the shower. Sometimes I’ll be mid conversation and I’ll have an idea. The rest is just making sure it works as a finished piece of music and that just takes as long as it takes.

What would your idyllic life as an artist look like?

Mike: I think I’ve been pretty fortunate to be able to make music for so long. As long as I’m still making music, I’m happy. If people like what I’m doing then I guess they’ll let me know about it and I’ll find a way to stay connected with those people and perform for them as much as I can.

You have some great songs on Spotify! I’d like to know, do you have a favorite song that you’ve released thus far?

Mike: I don’t really have a favorite. Hopefully I’ve not written my favourite song yet haha.

What is the next “big thing” the world can expect from you?

Mike: I’ve been speaking to some friends about performing these songs live as a band.

To my surprise, some of the best musicians I know have said they want to do this and I can assure you I will be going all out to give you unforgettable live shows.
