“I instantly connected with the unique sounds of dance music and fell in love with it. ” – Marty Mcfly
INTERVIEW
Hello, Marty! I’d love to know, when did you first discover your passion for music?
Marty: It was in the end of my high school years that I first discovered what was then the early rave scene. With music like T99 Anastasia, Prodigy, B-Sides, Joey Beltram – my first real discovery of dance music of began. I instantly connected with the unique sounds of dance music and fell in love with it. From there, I dived into the scene and started to learn how to DJ. Following the likes of Carl Cox and Slipmatt, I enjoyed many weekends raving across the UK and Europe.
You have so many great songs released on Spotify – what is your favorite song you’ve written or recorded to date?
Marty: My most recent release it titled, “A New Light” – my inspiration for the organic house music style comes from living in Ibiza and leading labels like All Day I Dream. That organic sound is just amazing, and it works so well here on the island. Anyone who knows Ibiza is familiar with this sound, its music you can feel and fall in love with. I’ve listened to Ibiza global radio every day for ten years, and now becoming a resident of Ibiza, being a DJ is almost kind of a dream come true. Now I can play the sounds that I’ve listened to and have been inspired by for many years.
Who are the first music artists that inspired you and why?
Marty: The main artists that inspired me were Carl Cox and Pete Tong. In the early days, these two dominated the dance scene. Now, would-be artists such as Mass Digital and Lee Burridge have emerged – but Carl Cox and Pete Tong are still leading the game!
Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways has music helped you?
Marty: Music really has helped me over the years. Unfortunately, having to deal with mental illnesses growing up was often difficult, to say the least. When my father died after many years of being ill, my Mum was diagnosed with dementia at only 53. This really destroyed me and the family. This was so difficult to handle, and to see her slowly deteriorate over the course of the next 11 years was heart-breaking and soul destroying. It affected my marriage which eventually broke down, the pain causes stress and heartache and unfortunately made me very miserable and angry at the world. I look back now and see my errors, but unfortunately you cannot change the past. It has taken me nearly four years to get over that pain with help from friends old and new, discovering my love for music again, in addition to getting into fitness and making my life healthy! If I can offer any advice, find a great PT you connect with, and get healthy. It is true what they say – healthy body, healthy mind.
After my marriage break-up and after my mum died, I sold my business in the UK and moved to the one place that makes me happy – Ibiza. Sometimes it does feel like a dream world, the island is a very special place, and also the heart of dance music. At the same time, it is also a hard place to live full-time. The island is full of energy and certainly has a lot of spirit! This has inspired me to return to my music career to create more music productions and develop my dream job of playing on Ibiza global radio every week!
What is the next “big thing” the world can expect from you?
Marty: Well I have two new releases both in the Ganwick House genre. I am continuing to work hard on my productions, continuing to develop my skills all the time. Hopefully, onwards and upwards and eventually get signed to one of my favourite labels. This, and forever growing my show on Ibiza global radio.
