ABOUT

KYLO is an electro-pop artist based out of Toronto, Ontario. Consistently creating catchy yet experimental tracks, her vocals demand attention as they spring forth from enchanting, echoed layers. Following the release of her debut EP Phases, she teased us with two singles, ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Your Eyes’, before dropping her latest EP EXIT (Oct 2019). EXIT delivers KYLO’s signature atmospheric and sultry vocals, while tapping into a darker, more seductive side that listeners haven’t seen from her before.

As a Toronto local, she has played various venues across the city including the Mod Club, the Baby G, and the Drake showcasing interactive, fan-focused sets. After dropping her single “Undertow” last fall, KYLO has just released her latest track “Follow” a vibey summer love soundtrack and is working on new music for 2022.

INTERVIEW

When did you first discover your passion for music, KYLO?

K: I started loving music when I was around the age of four through my dancing and dance classes. After that, I moved onto doing musical theatre and taking voice lessons where I realized how much I loved singing! Growing up, I performed in talent shows, open mics in different venues. Eventually, I moved to Toronto, where I began to teach myself guitar. It was there that I started meeting many different kinds of producers and musicians in the area. It wasn’t long after that, that I started releasing my own music!

What three words would you say best summarize your music?

K: Chill, dreamy, sultry.

So tell me about your latest song release “Follow”. What was the inspiration for you to write it?

K: My new song “Follow” just came out Friday, Aug 27th, and the music video is out Friday, Sep 3rd! I am so happy with how this track turned out, and it was super chill to make. I wrote it about feeling like you’re losing someone you have been with for a while, watching a person change, and not being able to get them back from all of the emotions that come with that.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal their injuries… in what ways has music helped you?

K: Writing is definitely a form of therapy for me. Whenever I’m going through something whether it be in my love life or other personal things, I like to just get a pen and paper and write everything out. Forming my thoughts and ideas into a proper song also is really cool to look back on after you are out of that place.

How do you want your music to help other people?

K: If anyone can relate to what I’m saying in my songs, I think that’s super cool. Even if it moves just one person, I’d love that.

What is your songwriting process?

K: I usually will go to the studio with a producer and tell them a few references . They’ll start a beat, then I’ll bring the beat home and write and record some melody and lyric ideas on it. After that, I’ll go back to the studio and record what I have and rearrange whatever I need to, and the song comes together from there! Sometimes though, I just jam on my guitar and write a song that way.

Who are the first musical artists that inspired you?

K: I was obsessed with Janis Joplin in high school and just loved the way she was so free and belted her raspy voice! She inspired me to write my own songs and just go for it. When I decided to pursue electronic pop music, artists such as Banks, Grimes, Tove Lo and Purity Ring were big influences for me as well.
