Spliffy Mars is a rising star in Atlanta's underground music scene

Spliffy Mars is a 20 year old artist originally from Bloomfield, CT but now resides in Atlanta. He first started making music after being inspired by his southern roots and musical influences such as Gucci Mane, Future, and Young Thug. He released his first song in 2016, but did not end up taking music seriously until early 2019. In 2019, Mars released his “Don’t Wanna Go” hit on SoundCloud and his first project “Strictly4MyRounds”. These tracks were so well received across streaming platforms that he began building his dedicated fanbase.

His debut mixtape “Hey,Mars?” was released early 2021, solidifying his sound as an artist, and granting him a spot in the underground with his own taste and style. In November of 2021, he released a rapidly growing song that already has over 80,000+ streams titled, “First Day Out”, along with a couple of other tracks on SoundCloud.

Spliffy Mars is currently preparing to release a project in the first quarter of 2022 titled, “Away Feeling”, that he says is going to have top tier production from producer tysouf, himself, and a couple of his longtime producer friends. The “No Stylist” rapper is literally a song away from mainstream success.

INTERVIEW

Hello, Spliffy Mars! I’d love to know, when did you first discover your passion for music?

S: I discovered my passion for music when I was thirteen and I was chilling with a group of friends listening to Chicago style drill music. We then started recording on a phone microphone trying to imitate the rappers we heard like Chief Keef, and from there I started making music – recording songs off an iPod and uploading them on SoundCloud.

What three words would you say best summarize your music?

S: Unorthodox, Intricate, Distinctive.

Tell me about your latest music release.. what was the inspiration behind it?

S: My last official release was my recent deluxe version of my debut mixtape “Hey,Mars?”. My inspiration for this project was basically the feeling of being in Atlanta. ATL has always played a part in my style and is like a second home to me. The main concept behind the whole project was just a view on my different emotions song to song. The reloaded edition of “Hey,Mars?” was all recorded in tysouf’s bedroom in South Atlanta, so the mood was druggy vibes and crazy flows.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, and heal past wounds… in what ways has music helped you?

S: For starters, music has helped me mentally and physically. Mentally, being that I can simply pour emotions onto a instrumental that resembles whatever day I just had is crazy. When I’m going through something and make a song about it, it makes me feel better about my situation because it’s not in my head anymore the problem is on a beat for YOU to listen and also that shares my mind with my viewers and the fact that people love to hear what I have to say is an awesome feeling. Physically it helps me because nowadays you get paid off of streaming so it definitely helps me pay bills.

How do you want your music to help other people?

S: I want my music to genuinely make people happy. I want someone to play my music when they’re having a bad day just so that they can smile. I want to make my music make people happy and help them with any depression. I don’t like making sad music, even if the words are sad my music always makes you want to bump, so I wanna make people happy when they hear me.

What would you say is your songwriting process?

S: My process is basically getting myself in a recording mood like if I have a lot to say I will start listening to really constructive well constructed instrumentals, and I’ll sit down with my mic right next to my face and punch in and out while freestyle recording. Once I come up with a melody and a rhyme scheme, that’s all she wrote.

That is very interesting! So, who are the first musical artists that inspired you?

S: The first music artists to ever inspire me were Michael Jackson, 50 Cent, and Lil Wayne. I remember when MJ had just died and they were playing all his hits on MTV, and I fell in love with the King of Pop.

I’d like to know, what is your favorite song you’ve written or recorded to date?

S: It’s really a tie between “Intoxicated” off the “Hey,Mars?” tape or my “First Day Out” freestyle. “Intoxicated” has a very well impactful beat and it makes you feel like your in a retro scary movie. The “First Day Out” freestyle is also one of my favorites because its really a raw ass freestyle, about the time I did in jail.

What is the next “big thing” the world can expect from you?

S: The next big thing the world can expect from me is that I have a project called “Away Feeling” on the radar coming soon, and it has a handful of platinum selling producers on there, so be on the lookout!

Where will you be performing next?

S: My next show is supposed to be in June of this year in Hartford CT for Summer Fiesta 2022. I’m also in the works of scheduling a mini tour for the end of year.
