INTERVIEW

Hello, Steffan! I’d love to know, when did you first discover your passion for music?

S: My first love for music was really early in my life. These kinds of cheesy bands (in Sweden, they are called “dance-bands”) used to come and play in the local park where I lived as a kid.

Older people were dancing and I was just staring at the drums and electric guitars, and somehow they inspired me a lot to start to dreaming about being a rock star. I later found an electric guitar in a garbage bin with only two strings, and I began hammering on that guitar until it sounded more or less ok, early Ramones style. When I was 15 years old, I played in a local punk band.

What three words would you say best summarize your music?

S: Melancholic, loving-ful, and melodic.

Tell me about your latest music release, “Love Me Tonight”.. what was the inspiration behind it?

S: It is a romantic, melancholic dance EDM song. I worked hard on the production to get the right sound, and the song is mastered in the famous Cutting Room in Stockholm. It is definitely a dance song set at 130 BPM, pumping out love. The lyrics are a reflection from my own life, about a girl I met.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, and heal past wounds… in what ways has music helped you?

S: Music has helped me a lot, but it is not easy to write a song.. sometimes there are a lot of emotions and weird stuff that comes out. The crazy thing is that all of that stuff needs to come out, otherwise it gets stuck in your head and you can’t progress as a songwriter. I was too political for a while, like a faultfinder times ten, and of course my lyrics were just too heavy to listen to. I am trying to write songs about feelings, like love, passion and separation etc. not so much about politics.

How do you want your music to help other people?

S: First and foremost, I would like to inspire people to dream and be inspired to do things in their life – to be creative. In Sweden, there are a lot of double standards in politics, and also in some parts of collective consciousness, it is accepted to say one thing and then after do the totally opposite, like nobody cares. I used to think differently about getting political messages out to the listeners before – I was way too hard in my lyrics, and I don’t like that anymore. I try to preach only with my own example so to say, being a vegan, and that I love spirituality etc.

What would you say is your songwriting process?

S: Create your own inspiration, never sit and wait for other people to inspire you, very important. I record ideas on my phone or write them down on a piece of paper. I need to take time to write a song. It’s like giving birth, I push myself a lot. I am just sitting and repeating the melodies, singing the same thing over and over changing the chords and melodies a bit here and a bit there. My creative process is like that until the melody and chords are ready. I do the lyrics on a completely different day maybe on a train or in a café.

That is very interesting! So, who are the first musical artists that inspired you?

S: Kiss, Sweet, Slade, The Runaways, and Suzi Quatro.

You’ve written so much over the years, I’d like to know, what is your favorite song you’ve written or recorded to date?

S: I like many of my songs. I love one of my songs that I sing in Swedish called, “JAG HAR REST JORDEN RUNT SÅ LÄNGE JAG KAN MINNAS” (I have been traveling around this world as long as I remember), but also many of my songs with my band UNDROP that was on top of charts around the world. Beautiful songs.. and I made some nice money on the songs too, that’s always great.

What is the next “big thing” the world can expect from you?

S: I am doing a promotion tour around Europe in 2022, in my 7 meter long Mercedes Sprinter. I bring full equipment for concerts, not just backline, but also the PA so I can organize and take spontaneous concerts on the road, so to say. I bring some recording equipment too on the road, so I can record new songs.

Tell me about your band UNDROP, what was your inspiration to found this group and where can people see you play?

S: UNDROP is a down-to-earth romantic SK8 rock band from Spain-Sweden. Over many years, UNDROP played in the streets developing our unique musical style. We have played and lived in countries like England, USA, Spain, Germany, India, Denmark, Poland, Guatemala, France, Mexico. We run our own independent record label with worldwide music distribution. We have had several hits and sold gold and platinum with songs like “TRAIN”, “WAKE ME UP”, and more.
